If you follow my blog you will know that I bought these forks last year and fitted them over the Christmas holidays. Since buying my Trek Procaliber I was not really using the suspension fork and was left locked out most of the time. For the type of riding, terrain I use this bike on I did not need 120mm of travel so why not go old school and fit a rigid fork and drop a few grams. The market is very limited to a good quality carbon fork with the correct hub / headset sizing etc at a reasonable price point. I opted for the Travers fork as it was available, light and there was an option for a glossy black finish. I will probably not use the triple cage mounts but nice to know they are there if I ever do decided to use them. The quality of the forks looks spot on and comes with a massive long steerer tube to fit any frame headtube in the world. I also come with the streerer bung, some stickers and a neck tube, cheers Michael. Delivery was very fast as well. Fitting was simple enough - see the photos below. The feel of the fork whist riding is post on, just dropped the front tyre pressure down alittle and there is ample clearance to fit a wider tyre and still have mud clearance. The steering is spot on and there is not too much trial buzz / harshness coming up through. You can feel the front end is alot lighter and more responsive now. In the upcoming Fresh Goods Sunday Blogs I will cover the MT Zoom steerer bung, Trek Knockblock headset spacers and Shimano brake hose olive and insert.

I decided to get my bike stand set up for this job, make life easier
First remove the front disc brake caliper - 2 bolts
Remove the front brake hose clamp from the Fox hose guide
Remove the front wheel
Remove the Fox remote lock out lever from the brake lever clamp
Remove the headset cap
Loosen the stem bolts and left the stem off
Remove the Knock Block spacers
Fox suspension fork removed
Clean up the headset parts and stem etc before reassembly
Bottom headset bearing size
Top headset bearing size
Weighed the suspension forks
Ridged forks uncut
Not much difference between the two axles
Removed the lower crown race from the old forks
Fitted the crown race
Set up the saw guide in my vice
Cut down the steerer
Reweighed the forks and fitted the Mt Zoom fork bung
Job all complete and looking good in the sun |
