Early Sunday morning local mtb loop before the storm

Well it was a case of suck it and see this morning. The forecast last night on BBC and Met were a mixed affair ranging from pouring rain from 5am to 10pm and the other from 9am to 2pm. I was up before 7am and stuck my head out of the window and it was dry so had a very quick change into my cycle kit and dragged the Cube e mtb out. I pumped up the tyres and I was off for a local spin. I checked the forecast again before I left and both said heavy rain from 9am onwards so I put on my Goretex lightweight Gore jacket just in case I got caught out. The route was a simple enough straight down to Durham, loop around the riverside and over to Maiden Castle, through Houghall woods for some rather dry single track. Then back around Maiden Castle before looping around to hit The Trod. The sun was in and out and hazy. It was not that warm hovering around 12 degrees on the Garmin but felt warm and muggy for some strange reason. There was no wind so it was easier going and it was a fast descent down off the The Trod back around Durham river banks before heading home via Frankland, The Sands and The Carrs. There was quite a few people out and about, more than I thought for early on Sunday morning. The Uni is getting ready for the return of all the students. The palace green is full of Covid testing marquees and also down at the Race Course. The NE is already the highest in the UK for Covid, give it another 2-3 weeks after the students come back we will all be working from home again lol!
All in just under 18 miles in 1hr 31 mins with just under 1000ft of climbing, below are a few snaps from the ride, enjoy and hopefully more soon-
