Earlry Pre Fresh Goods, Friday - Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 4.8" & Surly Ultralight Inner Tube

A rather large box landed yesterday with some Fat Bike goodies in from Westbrook cycles
First up a Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 26 x 4.8" LiteSkin PaceStar Evolution SL tyre. This is the only version of four Jumbo Jims that is available in the UK. The other three versions have been put back more times than I don't know what. I am  happy with my Surly Bud up front but fancied something lighter and faster rolling for the spring/summer/autumn drier trails.
The Surly Bud weighted in at 1606g (claimed 1585g) and the Jumbo Jim LiteSkin weighs in at 1263g (claimed 1150g on box & 1190g on Ison/Schwalbe website) so more near the claimed weight of the 4.8" SnakeSkin version 1290g!
Looking at the tyre the tread pattern looks spot on for the tyre of riding I do over summer months and should roll better. I have not fitted the tyre yet but will feed back on the volume/size etc asap. The rrp is £78.99, I paid £62.07. When I bought my Bud the rrp was £94.99 but Surly have dropped the rrp to £89.99 now.  Below is some of the manufacturers blurb -

Jumbo Jim is the Schwalbe tyre for one of the hot trends at Eurobike 2014, the fat bike. Fat bikes are available as mountain and trekking bikes as well as pedelecs.
Schwalbe's Jumbo Jim is lighter than you think. In the conventional width of 4 inches (100 mm), with 990 grams, its still less than a kilo. The alternative, the ultra-wide Jumbo Jim, measures an impressive 4.80 inches (120 mm). Naturally, the appropriate Schwalbe tube is also available for the Jumbo Jim.
Jumbo Jim loves extreme conditions: gravel, loose sand or deep snow. According to Marcus Lambertz, the Schwalbe Product Manager in charge: "The only solution in these cases is a large volume combined with an extremely low air pressure starting at about 0.4 bar. This generates the optimum traction needed for propulsion."
By the way, fat bikes are not new. Originally, they came from Alaska and Canada, where their riders plough through snow and sludge with the fat tyres. Now, the trendy bikes from North America have crossed the Atlantic and are finding many enthusiastic fans in Europe.
In the standard version, Jumbo Jim is Tubeless Easy and has a SnakeSkin. Alternatively, there is also the lighter LiteSkin version.

Second Up - Surly 26" x 3.0-4.8" Ultralight 0.8mm inner tubes. I have used Surly's standard 1.0mm tubes with mixed quality / success. There are many other manufacturers tubes out there now which are cheaper and better quality ie Vee Tyres & Schawble etc.
When Surly brought out there thinner version I though this would be ideal to also lighten up the front end with the Jumbo Jim. The rrp is £14.99 compared to £11.99 for the standard 1.0mm. I paid £12.06 each, still a hefty price for some black rubber!
I popped them onto the scales, the lightest of the two 312g compared to 310g claimed weight - bang on!

1st one, 0.8mm
2nd one, 0.8mm

standard 1.0mm tube

already for fitting!
So that should make the front end 470g / 1.04lbs lighter on the Beargrease - more wheelie friendly
