I did have the combined cadence & speed sensor on my good nano road bike but due the frame / wheel / magnet clearance I had to have the speed sensor arm turned right the way around and up in the air and looked awful on the bike. A couple of years ago Garmin redesigned the sensors and made them as separate units and the new cadence one goes on the crank arm not the frame and doesn't require any magnets either.
Time to get one bought, the rrp is £35, there is not many bike shops in the uk list them or had stock at the time and very little discount. I was putting an order in with bike-discount and they had them in so added one to the order so I got free p&p. Bike Discount price works out at about £25 so not too bad compared to UK prices.
When it arrived the unit is very small and light. Fitting it too the back of the crank arm is not the easiest of things to do when you have big fat fingers like me. Its tricky to pull the band over both hooks but once its on its on.
Now for the setting up, well it works on Ant+ plus not like the old one so took some working out as I am not very good with technology but got there in the end.
Here is the manufacturers blurb -
"Introducing the Garmin Cadence Sensor – Crank Arm Mounted. Monitor your performance with the Garmin Cadence sensor for precise and accurate readings. The cadence sensor fastens to any size crank arm and tracks pedalling strokes per minute, so you can train for your optimal performance. This cadence sensor is compatible with the Edge 1000, 810, 800, 510, 500, 910 XT, 310 XT, as well FR610 and FR70 series watch units. The pack includes the Cadence sensor, Sensor fastening straps and the manual. Train to the peak of your ability and record your data accurately for precise data readings."
The old sensor has gone onto the Pilgrims so I can record the cadence when I am out n about of that bike as well. The sensor arm is in the downwards position so doesn't look too bad.
