When we go out on family/group rides and plan to have a cafe/shop break we take a small coiled cable lock. The one we have is too short and can only lock a couple of bikes together. I was after a longer one and larger diameter cable. It had to light weight, self coiling and budget value. The Masterlock Key Cable lock model 8126 fitted the spec and was bought for less than a fiver. Its coils up small, lightweight and does the job of locking three/four bikes together. Its by no means the most secure lock but we are never far away from the bikes and always in sight of them. The cable is 1.80m by 8mm and covered in a plastic sleeve to prevent damaged to paintwork etc. Its easy to use and carry in your jersey pocket or in my case normaly my Alpkit frame bag.
