"The Mukluk is our ride-anywhere fatbike. It provides extreme tire floatation and traction and rides where other bikes can't whether on game trails, sandy beaches, backwoods mud runs, snowy singletack, or frozen lakes and rivers.

Alternator dropouts make this an incredibly capable, and versatile, beast. Run geared or singlespeed setups depending on the mission at hand. Pack-rafting, beach riding, and bushwacking? Go single. Trail or snow riding? Gears might be nice.
The Enabler fork further adds to this versatility. Run waterbottles or Anything Cages on your fork legs for a bikepacking trip. Perhaps a low rider or front rack is the order of the day?
For 2013, the Mukluk geometry was updated with cues from our venerable El Mariachi and becomes more trail oriented. Shorter chainstays and a slightly higher bottom bracket make the bike more maneuverable, nimble, and agile. The Alternator dropouts also allow you to customize your handling. Run the dropouts forward for a more nimble handling bike, or position them rearward to increase stability and comfort.
Aluminum tubing is lightweight and extremely corrosion resistant. Melting snow, adventures beneath the high tide line, or an accidental dunking in the beaver pond won't cause the frame to rust.

Updated- 2014 Carbon Beargrease has landed and its gone back

Yes it has arrived and ready for build action, a few pics to keep you going, i have never seen such big blades on a pair of forks. The matt carbon finish is just lovely ;-)
UPDATE - started to build the bike and when i fitted the seatpost and set the height it was alot lower in the frame than normal, decided to check the frame size and measured 21" - XL, yes they had put the wrong sized bike in a 19" Large box - ever worse news is there is no more Large in the UK. Only been wating since mid Feb when Salsa did the press launch on this bike, didnt even manage to sling my leg over it ;-(

Salsa 2014 Carbon Beargrease has hit the UK shores today

The first batch has landed at Ison the distributors today and dispatched to LBS that had pre ordered them. Its been a long wait since Salsa first announced the carbon version. I got an email from Westys saying that there was a Large coming their way and is due in tomorrow ! Wonder what it will be like compaired to the alu Beargrease?  

1/2 frozen & 1/2 melted ride & a cold night ride as well

A reasonable frost this morning with the windscreen frozen and white grass, not that i could see it at 6.30am in the pitch black. The ground was still frozen at dinnertime in the shaded areas but where the sun had hit the ground the old lines were like sticky black pea soup. Forgot to fit my mud guards as i though it was going to be a dry ride, i was sprayed from head to toe in freezing black water by the time i was finished.  It was a freezing headwind out and a freezing tail wind on the way back. Lovely day with glorious sun shine with clear views for miles over the moors for a change. Below are some photos but none of the night ride because it was far too cold to take off my gloves to use the camera!

 

Neccl Rd8 Final

It was the Grand Finale of the Neccl Super Saturday Series @ Hetton Lyons Country Park yesterday. The day started with the U12's race based on the grounds adjacent to the wheel and woods. They had a cracking race with plenty of battles going on between riders who were fighting for positions/points.
Then it was onto the U14/16's who did the full sen course. There was a good keen field of riders all eager on the start line for 30mins of tough racing in the near gale force winds. Again there was plenty battles going on within the race.
Onto the main race and we gathered on the tarmac straight for a sprint start onto the course. The course had a great mix of all types of terrain from gentle climbs, singletrack through the wooded sections, long straights and twisty sections on the open grass sections. Ground conditions were very good with no sloppy mud and firm ground. I cannot comment on the race its self as i was battling away with riders myself at the back of the field. I decided to take the fat bike for a laugh as i have not done any cx racing this season so far and could not be bothered to swap my touring tyres over to my racing tyres on my cx bike. I had a fantastic race and really enjoyed trying to catch the rider in front then staying in front of them. I pulled through the field and gained quite a few positions by the time the bell lap had come around. 55mins later i was shattered with the wind killing me off, bloody good work out and it showed just how unfit i am at this level of output! The NECCL SUPER SATURDAY SERIES will return in 2014, bigger / better with new venues and hopefully some old venues that havent been used for a few years. 

Fresh Goods Sunday - Park Tool Star Nut Setter

I dont fit many star nuts to fork steerer tubes but when i do i use my old cheapo setter. Every time it sets the nut wonky and have to level it off with an old screwdriver and hammer, not the best. Time to add to my Park Tool collection and buy a proper one to do the job correctly in the first place. There are a couple of models but i ended up with the TNS-4 mdoel, rrp £30 but i got mine for £20.68 inc next day delivery. Here is all the technical info. I have not used it yet but will report back after i have fitted a new star nut. 

 

NECCL FINAL RD8 @ Hetton Lyons Sat 14th Dec + League Presentation & Agm

The Grand Final of the NECCL 2013 Winter Series is @ Hetton Lyons Country Park, Hetton Le Hole. Saturday 14th Dec. There is racing for all ages and abilities on the day from complete novice to expert. Turn up on the day and sign on, simples.
After the each of the "on the day kids presentations" I am going to present a goodie bag to all the kids who have or will complete the overall 2013 Series. So the following riders can qualify

Back to Warm Day & Night ride again

What a change from yesterdays freezing cold foggy ride to a ride @ 11 degrees and blowing nearly a gale. It was an out & back ride again so was a hard slog into a headwind for most of the way out but i knew when i reached the top it was going to be a very fast return leg and i wasnt wrong. Didnt see another cyclist the whole time i was out and only a hand full of friendly walkers. Below are some photos from the ride.
The night ride was a short blast down to Durham to do some 'Banking' then a loop on the way home. Temperature had dropped but still very pleasant for this time of year.

Foggy offroad ride today

Well it was forecast early morning fog then clearing to a lovely day, well not where i was. The sun did try and break through at one point (see photo below with a shadow) but the fog soon rolled back in. It was a quick out and back ride today, the out was most enjoyable - too enjoyable because when i turned it was a freezing cold headwind all the way back in. It reached just above 3 degrees at one point and down to 1.5 low in the headwind on the way back in. The trails were damp but still mud and puddle free. I think that will change after tomorrow. A night ride was on the cards but got distracted sorting out prizes for the Neccl Presentations this Saturday. See what tomorrow brings 



Another night ride but no day ride

No day ride today as i was a computer course all day. It wasnt too boring and learnt a few new things on Microsoft Windows 7 operating systems but didnt have time for a ride just an hours walk out in the fresh air.
Darkness and the fat bikes come alive with Lupine power. Didnt have much time so was a quick blast around Durham City / Maiden Castle / River banks and back home. There was one shock tonight when we went to cross a little metal bridge to join up a loop and it has gone, it was there last night but not tonight! had to double back as the other way around is still blocked with a land slip. Not to worry is was still a warmish night and the trails are bone dry.
