After riding the Mason Bokeh with 650b wheels I found the standard 50t outer ring was too big for the type and terrain that I ride. I looked all over for a replacement outer 46t ring for the Ultegra 6800 chainset and struggled so had to take the plunge and find a Shimano original replacement. At the time Madison had no stock, CRC was the only place I could find one in the uk but was £90, then I looked on Bike-discount website in Germany and they had them listed for less than £75 but no stock. I signed up for the email alert and within a couple of weeks they had them back in. I ordered one straight away but went up lightly in price to £77. It arrived 4 days later with no problems via DPD. I looked again a couple of days later and they had sold out again.
Fitting is simple enough and you don't have to remove the chainset from the bike. The only problem being is the 46t version outer ring does not have the built in chainring nuts. So I fitted it with some spare chainring nuts that I had in my box. Part 2 next week will cover that side of things. The chainring is light and beautifully machined on the back. In use it is much better and I am now using more of the cogs on the rear cassette and not dropping down to inner ring so much. Shifting is as smooth as ever on the front and no problems changing up or down.
