UPDATE - the rims and old 700c wheelset have been dropped off and stripped and measured ready for new DT Swiss double butted spokes / brass nipples then the rebuild will commence. I will post up a new blog when they are ready to collect and I can fit the tubeless rim tape, tubeless valves, rotors, cassette, speed sensor and tyres.
After some research for 650b / 27.5” x 24 hole alu rims, Mavic had none that I could find in the uk so the next port of call was DT Swiss. There website is much better and it came up with four options. Two with 22 mm internal width- R500 rrp £40 and rr481 rrp £80. I checked both specs and rr481 is slightly lighter, comes with nipple and washers and 2mm deeper rim but is double the price.
Then were was also two rims with 24mm internal width GR531 and G540 again one is double the rrp of the other. Finding these in the uk with 24 hole drilling was impossible. Bike discount de has both in stock at the time of writing this, £44 and £23.50 plus £13.14 p&p. I might have been better off with the G540 as it has the same internal width as my Hunt 650b wheelset but DT Swiss’s chart says an R500 should be possible to fit a 50mm tyre on a 22mm rim. So I dry fitted a 2” tyre on the rim with a tube and inflated. It did not look too bulged on the side walls and should ride ok. G450 x 27.5” in 24 hole does not exist in the uk! The quality of the R500 looks spot on for the money should build up into a strong wheelset.
RRP £39.99 each and I paid £35.19 inc next day delivery from Wiggle. Also Bike discount de has them in stock for £19.88 each plus £13.14 p&p so even cheaper still.
Manufacturers blurb - Having a rim which supports your riding, day in, day out, over thousands of kilometres. The R 500 will deliver all that and much more at an unbeatable price-performance ratio.
