I have started using KMC chains over the last few years mainly just for the bling factor. Shimano chains work great, last along time and are good value for money but just look plain and boring. The Creo Sl come with a standard non e bike chain. Considering the rrp of the bike you would think the spec would be at least Ultegra but no its was 105. I ran the 105 chain for a good few months and could not fault the performance of the chain and was not showing any early signs of wear, ie stretching. My Cannondale Synapse Neo came with a top end e specific Shimano chain and has never missed a beat. So then do i buy the same chain for the Creo or a KMC e chain or keep to a standard chain? Well in the end i decided to keep to a standard none e chain and as you can see by the photo above it was a bling model. I was in two minds on this model as its lightweight design with hollow plates etc might not last two minutes on an e bike but i have the same model 10 speed chain but in gold on another non e bike and could not fault it. I also bought the same chain back in Aug 2015 but i cannot remember which bike i fitted it to.
Anyway swapping the chain only takes about 5 mins if you have the right tools - chain splitter and chain pliers. I made the length exactly the same amount of links as the old one that came off. KMC come with a speed link which makes life a lot easier than messing about with pins. Over the last few months since fitting the chain it has had quiet a few rides from short ones to longer ones in all conditions from dry dusty trails to muddy wet trails. I have not had to use my Fenwicks foaming degreaser on the chain yet as i have been using Finish Line dry lube which is a lot less messier than wet lube. To be honest i could not notice any difference in the performance of the chain, it moves up and down the cassette very smoothly and quiet. The polished plates do shine in the sun when the chain is clean and the factory wax oil has worn off. I have used my Park Tool chain checker to check the wear/stretch and is still more or less the same as when i fitted the chain from new. Only time will tell how long the chain will last but hopefully i will not need to replace it soon.
RRP varies from £53 up to £70! and I paid £39.95 inc p&p Sigma Sports
