Last minute weekend away in Berwick upon Tweed / Spittal

After all the recent going on's just as well did not book a summer holiday. We decided to have a weekend away before all the dressings / stiches etc come off this week and hopefully I will get my results from the hospital. We booked an overnight stay at a local b&b as the Travelodge was £115!
The drive up the A1 on Saturday morning was just unreal. The wipers were nearly on full speed for the whole 80 miles. There must have been over an inch of standing water on the road, very little visibility and some massive puddles. On the plus side we left early so there was very little traffic. We stopped at Marshalls cafĂ© next to Go Outdoors from breakfast before calling in past DOCKSIDE GALLERY at Tweedmouth to see Mary. We had put down a deposit on a piece of art which we collected / paid the balance when we were in.
From there we headed over into the town and parked up on the narrow road heading towards the pier. By now it had stopped raining and even the sun came out! The forecast was to lash down all day so we took our rain coats just in case. After a good walk around the town and we did quite allot of shopping we had a steady walk back to the van.
After a quick lunch break it started to cloud over but was still dry so we walked along the pier which was beautiful as there was little wind and the tide was out. On the way back we hoped over the wall and walked along the beach behind the pier. After six hours of walking we headed up to the b&b to put our feet up for a well earned rest.
We had a walk up to the fish n chip shop for tea and sat on the bench in the town watching the world go by. We were going to head back but the sun came out so walked up to onto the ramparts and did a full loop of the town and enjoyed the lovely views in all directions. As we were heading up the last hill it clouded over and it started spitting rain. We were only in about 10 mins and the heavens opened. That was it for us for the night.

On Sunday we woke to heavy rain so went down and had a cracking breakfast, packed up and headed off to Morrisons for some food shopping & fuel then across to the retail park for some more shopping. It was lashing down but we headed down to Spittal to have a look around the summer festival. It was a complete wash out with heavy driving rain and massive puddles every where. Such a shame as there will have been so much work gone into the organisation of the event. At least they had a dry day on the Saturday. The drive home was nearly as the drive up. The traffic was very heavy and came to a grinding halt in three traffic jams of over a good mile each. I could not wait to turn off the A1 when we reached Chester Le Street. It was 75 miles of pure torture.

Mary also told up about the local art exhibition so we called in past that on Saturday, there was some real good paintings but everyone we liked was sold!

PS - Sorry forgot to mention that Fresh Goods Sunday was washed away with all the rain. It will be back next Sunday!
