When I bought the Salsa Carbon Beargrease many years ago the bike had a Cane Creek headset fitted from standard. When I was using the bike more often the bottom bearing did not last very long even though I always pack it full of grease and stripped it down / cleaned the headset on a regular basis. The top bearing lasted longer as you you expect as it does not get the onslaught of mud / water spray from the front wheel. Its no big deal as its a standard ahead steerer / stem set up so takes less than 5 minutes to undo the top cap and loosen the two stem bolts and drop the fork out. The original bearings are hit n miss to find but there are loads of aftermarket ones, some of which are probably better quality than the packaged Cane Creek ones. Since the bike has been parked up and only used a few times a year these replacement bearings should last a very long time due to the low mileage / use. For the money you cannot go wrong as bearings are a disposable item. Once the new bearings were fitted and the fork / stem refitted the front end feels just like new. Handlebars turn smoothly and no movement when the front brake is applied. After a few rides I might have to loosen the stem bolts and give the top cap/bolt a half turn and retighten the stem bolts to take up any movement / settlement / play in the headset.
41mm RRP £8.99 and I paid £7.91, 52mm RRP £14.99 and I paid £7.91 both from Wiggle inc 2 day delivery.
Manufacturers Blurb -
BAA 1130 41mm - 36°x45°
BAA 1132 52mm - 36°x45°
or a bearing kit BAA1172 (not sure if this is available in the UK)
Whilst I had the fat bike out I put a water bottle cage on the seat tube. I also looked out some spares for the frame pack - multi tool, tyre levers, glueless patch kit, tyre boot, chain link, co2 cartridge, pump and inner tube.
